Maui is the most diverse island in Hawaii — and arguably the most beautiful. The Road to Hana winds through 64 miles of rainforest, waterfalls, and black sand beaches. Haleakalā volcano rises 10,000 feet above the clouds. The West Maui resorts are world-class. And the whale watching from December to April is the finest on earth.

  1. 01

Reserve a Haleakalā sunrise permit online at recreation.gov — they sell out weeks in advance and are required.

  2. 02

Leave for the Road to Hana by 7am — the road is one lane in many sections and gets congested by 10am.

  3. 03

Mama's Fish House requires reservations 3 months ahead — book the moment your travel dates are confirmed.

  4. 04

Whale watching season runs December–April — humpback whales are visible from shore in Kaanapali and Wailea.

  5. 05

West Maui (Kaanapali, Kapalua) has the best resort beaches; South Maui (Wailea) has the calmest water.
